I’m always interested in a face mask that promises to do a little more than simply give skin a quick drink of hydration, and 98 Beauty The Mask is certainly making some interesting claims.
This gold-hued hydrogel mask is designed to target three things that most of us would happily see a little improvement in: skin radiance, firmness and the appearance of expression lines. Rather than relying solely on the usual hydrating ingredients, the formula combines a stabilised form of vitamin C with two targeted active technologies, Firm Lift and Smooth Pep.
At £14 for a single mask, it’s definitely more of a considered skincare treat than an everyday sheet mask, so let’s take a closer look at what’s inside and what you can expect.
What Is 98 Beauty The Mask?

98 Beauty The Mask is a gold-hued hydrogel face mask designed to deliver a concentrated blend of skincare ingredients in a 20-minute treatment.
The brand has built the formula around three featured actives:
- Lumen C: A stabilised form of vitamin C designed to help neutralise free radicals and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone.
- Firm Lift: Designed to support the skin’s natural collagen renewal pathway and improve the appearance of firmness.
- Smooth Pep: A targeted technology designed to relax the micro-contractions associated with expression lines.
The idea is to give skin a more comprehensive treatment, combining hydration with ingredients aimed at improving the overall appearance of the complexion.
98 Beauty The Mask Ingredients
There are some interesting ingredients in this formula, particularly if you’re looking beyond the immediate hydrating benefits of a traditional sheet mask.
Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate)
This is a stabilised vitamin C derivative, chosen for its antioxidant properties and ability to help improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. Vitamin C is a useful skincare ingredient for anyone looking to boost radiance and tackle the appearance of dullness.
Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5
A peptide included in the formula and associated with the Firm Lift technology. Peptides are popular in skincare formulations targeting the appearance of fine lines and loss of firmness.
Carnosine
An antioxidant that helps protect against oxidative stress. It’s an interesting addition to a formula focused on maintaining a smoother, healthier-looking complexion.
Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate)
A familiar hydration hero. It helps attract and retain moisture, leaving skin feeling more comfortable, hydrated and plump.
Glycerin and Glyceryl Glucoside
Two ingredients that support skin hydration. Glycerin is an excellent humectant, while glyceryl glucoside helps support the skin’s moisture balance.
Allantoin
A skin-conditioning ingredient known for its soothing properties.
Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate and Tocopherol)
Two forms of vitamin E are included in the formula, bringing additional antioxidant benefits.
There’s also caffeine, grape extract, spirulina extract and sunflower seed oil in the wider ingredient list.
Overall, it’s a nicely considered combination of hydrating, conditioning and antioxidant ingredients, with a peptide adding another dimension to the treatment.
How To Use 98 Beauty The Mask
The mask is designed to be used on freshly cleansed, dry skin.
- Cleanse your face thoroughly and pat dry.
- Remove the protective film from the mask.
- Apply the inner hydrogel sheet evenly to your face, smoothing gently from the centre outwards.
- Leave on for 20 minutes.
- Remove and gently pat the remaining essence into your skin. There’s no need to rinse.
98 Beauty recommends using the mask two to three times a week.
My Review of 98 Beauty The Mask

First things first, I absolutely love that this mask is gold. It feels instantly decadent and makes what is essentially a 20-minute skincare treatment feel like a rather lovely little luxury.
Here’s a closer look at the mask in action…
The hydrogel itself is super soft against the skin, but what I particularly appreciated was how sturdy it felt. Some hydrogel masks can be ridiculously delicate and have a tendency to rip if you’re not incredibly careful when handling them. Not this one. It’s surprisingly robust, which means you can take your time positioning it, smoothing it out and making sure you get the snuggest possible fit.
And the fit really is good. Once I’d got it in place, it stayed exactly where it was supposed to. No sliding down my face, no bits lifting or needing constant readjustment. This is quite important with a sheet mask, because the last thing you want is to spend 20 minutes trying to stop it slipping off your chin.
The fragrance is lovely too. It has a pleasant, slightly luxurious scent without being overpowering. I’m usually quite mindful of fragrance in skincare, but I had absolutely no irritation or sensitivity while wearing this.
In fact, it was so comfortable that I ended up wearing it for considerably longer than the recommended 20 minutes. More like 30 minutes, actually, because I got rather distracted learning and recording the Baby Doll dance. Slightly embarrassing, but very entertaining! The important thing is that the mask stayed put throughout, and I was completely comfortable wearing it the entire time.
When I removed it, my skin looked lovely. Calm, plump and already noticeably more hydrated. There’s also a very generous amount of serum in the sachet, and when I say generous, I mean it. I poured the remaining contents into my hands without really thinking and was suddenly dealing with considerably more serum than I could possibly use in one go. There is easily enough for several further applications.
My top tip would be not to waste a drop. Use the excess on your neck and décolletage, and make the most of what is left in the sachet for further serum application.
The final result was super plump, glowy skin, and I was particularly impressed with how beautifully my makeup applied afterwards. My complexion looked fresh and smooth, with that lovely hydrated finish that makes everything sit a little better.
I can see this being a really good one to use before a special occasion or evening out, when you want your skin to look its absolute best. It’s also worth remembering that you’re getting a substantial amount of leftover serum as part of the experience, which goes some way towards justifying the £14 price tag.
Overall, I really enjoyed using 98 Beauty The Mask. It feels luxurious, it’s exceptionally comfortable, doesn’t slide around and, most importantly, left my skin looking beautifully plump and radiant. A very lovely little skincare treat, and one I’d happily reach for again before a night out.
